Learning at the Sea Life Centre

24 04 2015

On Thursday 16th April Year 2 spent a wonderful day together at the Sea Life Centre. We have been learning all about things that live Under the Sea and this was our chance to see lots of different sea creatures up close. We spent the morning exploring the aquarium and saw so many different species of fish. We spent time in the tunnel watching Giant Sea Turtle Ernie swim around with his friends which included: sharks, stingrays, and lots of different fish. We enjoyed crawling through the tunnel of Clown fish…it was just like being in the Great Barrier Reef with Nemo! The jellyfish tank was amazing and we could change the colour of the lighting which changed what colour the jellyfish looked! As we were walking around we used the touch screens to find out more information about the sea creatures in that tank – we did lots of super reading and learnt lots of new facts. The highlight of the morning was visiting the Rock pool. We were allowed to put our hands in and carefully touch the creatures in there. The lady showed us how to use the back of our fingers to stroke the yellow starfish and the crab’s hard shell. There were so many living things in there! After touching the creatures we had to give our hands a really good wash!
In the afternoon we had tasks that we needed to carry out. We investigated the Rockpool further, identifying all the sea creatures and plants that were in that habitat. We also spent some time carrying out observational drawings of our favourite sea animal. As we were walking around we had to identify if an animal was a fish, crustacean, mammal or a reptile.
It was tricky to take photographs because it was so dark inside…but we managed a few!!
A wonderful day was had by us all!

The North Wind doth Blow

27 01 2015

The North Wind doth blow,
And we shall have snow,
And what will the little mouse do then?
Poor thing!

He’ll go down a tiny hole,
And meet his best friend Mrs Mole,
And curl up in a blue tiny bowl,
Poor thing!

The North Wind doth Blow

27 01 2015

The North Wind doth blow,
And we shall have snow,
And what will the poor mole do then?
Poor thing!

He’ll dig a big hole,
A curl up in a bowl,
And have a deep sleep all Winter,
Poor thing!

The North Wind doth Blow

The North Wind doth blow,
And we shall have snow,
And what will the Fluffy Rabbit do then?
Poor thing!

He’ll roll up in a ball,
Next to a hard wall,
And sleep there all Winter,
Poor thing!

Winter poems.

27 01 2015

In English this week we have been exploring and writing some Winter poems. The first poem we have read is the well known poem ‘The North Wind doth Blow’. We explored the 2 verses, looking for rhyming words and counting syllables. In our second session we have adapted the poem to write about a different animal to the Robin. Have a read of some of the children’s ideas!!

From Farm to Fork!

24 10 2014

As part of our topic on Where does food come from?’ Year 2 were lucky enough to visit Tesco in Leyland on Monday 20th October. We spent some time in the warehouse and looking around how all the food is stored before it goes onto the shelves. During the morning we had a range of tasks to carry out. First we explored some foods and had to decide if they contained and wheat or flour. After that we were set the Rainbow Challenge. This meant that we had to head to the Fruit and Vegetable aisle to find an item of each colour and record it on our sheet. Then we took our colourful shopping to the checkout to have it scanned. After that we spent some time making healthy snacks, using oats, natural yoghurt and fruit. To finish off our visit, we visited the meat counter, cheese counter and Fishmongers. We watched the Fishmonger fillet a fish, and we completed a worksheet identifying 6 different types of fish. We had a brilliant morning!
